“Resentment is like having Someone stay rent free in your brain.”
In one of my seminars a lady shared with me an experience she had with a friend of hers. At college one of her guy friends was being picked on and teased on a constant basis by a fellow student. This had begun wearing on the young man but he stoically continued with his studies and commitments. There came a point however that the constant barrage of teasing and nastiness became too much. Our student, let us call him James, was heading for his room one day when the “bully” intersected him and began his routine of snide comments. James, who had finally had enough, turned to face the bully and shouted, “You have been staying long enough in my brain. Today I’m evicting you!”, which of course left the bully speechless. According to my seminar attendee, James turned around with a smile, contentment etched on his face and walked off, never to be bothered by the bully again!
“By not releasing the past, we make it incredibly difficult for ourselves to take hold of the future!”
Who are our “Bullies?” They may not be actual people. They could simply be past events that took place that have left us renting out a fair share of our brain space to these past offences. There are far too many people walking around still living in the past, either imprisoned by their past mistakes or by others’ past deeds. The truth is that unless we can learn to start evicting our “Bullies”, we will hang on to them and they will slow us down, hinder us and even handicap us for future success. There is a lot of success literature out there that tells us how to succeed, how to take hold of our destiny, to take control of our attitude. Now I do believe that these statements are true, however by not releasing the past we make it incredibly difficult for ourselves to take hold of the future. When our hands are gripped tightly onto the handlebars of the past, they have no ability to take hold of the steering wheel of the future!
“It all starts with your thoughts.”
As Ralph Waldo Emerson so eloquently put it:
“Watch your thoughts, they become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your habits. Watch your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”
It all starts with your thoughts. If your thoughts are consumed by past hurts, disappointments and a lack of forgiveness towards others, be it consciously or not, they will start spilling out into negative words and actions. They will begin polluting your character and impacting your future. Remember, NOT evicting your “Bullies” does not hurt the “Bully”, it damages and destroys YOU.
As Nelson Mandela said:
“It’s like you drinking poison and hoping the other person will die.”
Stop drinking the poison of the past, evict your “Bullies” and grab hold with both your hands onto a brighter, more fruitful future! Leave your past behind, it’s where it belongs.
